On the occasion of the current call for a moratorium on the development of artificial intelligence, the European AI Forum publishes the following statement:
European AI Forum: Call for prompt, clear legal framework for AI instead of preventing societal progress by a moratorium.
"Without a clear legal framework, there will be no trust in artificial intelligence, but without innovation, there will also be no progress for society."
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technology with great potential to significantly improve our lives. It can makes a massively contribution to climate protection, for example by helping us to increase energy efficiency. Persons with disabilities Older people may soon be able to lead more independent lives with the support of AI, for example by AI making up for visual impairments in while it can describing their surroundings and thereby empowering independence to people with visual impairments so that they can better find their way around on their own. Also other societal challenges, such as the skills shortage, can also be alleviated by AI.
As with any new technology, there will be new challenges. As with any new technology, we need to decide - as a society - how to set a beneficial framework.
First, we would like to record that we have never condoned irresponsible development, deployment and use of AI. For us, the focus is clearly on social progress to the benefit of our societies. We must not carelessly hinder it. For this reason, on the occasion of the recent debate on a development ban for artificial intelligence, we instead rather call for the rapid completion of the comprehensive legal framework for AI , that is already being discussed at the European level. This framework will provide binding rules for the development and application of trustworthy AI. It must take into account the principles of trustworthiness, in particular fairness, transparency and human oversight, technical robustness and security, privacy protection and data quality management. It must be in line with our values, but also allow for innovation and societal progress. We support the position of the federal government in Brussels with the aim of quickly creating this legal framework that enables innovation and progress.
The legal AI framework needs to be accompanied with implementing support measures to In order to develop an ecosystem for trustworthy AI in Europe, in particular additional further financial resources are also needed to finance the necessary infrastructure, further expand cutting-edge research and thus ensure the development of innovative applications for us all.
